Giving Thanks

Posted by pixe1 on November 26, 2008

This is the time of year we tradionally stop to think about what we are thankful for.   Some of us count our blessings everyday.  I do.  And I’m fortunate to have many.

I’m thankful for the the wonderful family and friends I have.  I am especially thankful for my mom and my son, who are so supportive of my artisan jewelry business.  I can never thank them enough for giving up their day, and helping and keeping me company during craft shows.  My dad has been wonderful too, sharing his business insight with me, and I thought that only was passed down from father to son!  What a lucky daughter I am!!

I’m thankful for you,  all my new friends and customers who take precious time out of their day to take a peek at my jewelry.  I find great joy in sharing my creations.

What are you thankful for?

Take a moment.  Count your blessings everyday, not just once  a year.  I’m willing to bet if a penny was put aside for each thing we are thankful for,  we would be rich!!!

May you all have a truly wonderful Thanksgiving day and stay safe!

Buying Handcrafted Jewelry: The Seller’s Reputation

Posted by pixe1 on November 18, 2008

Buying jewelry handcrafted by artisans is a very rewarding experience;  you get a piece of jewelry that no one else, or very few people are wearing.  This is a fantastic way to express your individuality!!

Last week pricing was discussed.  This week we will talk about what makes a seller reputable,   you need to feel comfortable with the person you are trading your hard earned money with for jewelry.  So, get a cup of coffee, relax, and join us for a few minutes!!

There are a few things to consider when deciding if a seller is reputable:  guarantees, feedback, questions.

Guarantees:  What kind of guarantee does the seller offer?  Do they even have one?  This is usually worded as their “Return Policy”.  Most sellers will make their return policy clear.  Many state a time limit to make returns, and who is responsible for shipping, and how refunds are handled.  Some sellers want to know the reason an item is returned, others ask no questions.  Let’s face it, if you get your item and you just don’t like it, you need to feel comfortable returning it without a hassle.   Pixe’s Treasure Chest has a no questions asked return policy.   However, comments are always appreciated in order for me to design a better product, especially if the reason for return is a design flaw.

Feedback:   Most online marketplaces use feedback as a means for a customer to gauge how reputable a seller is.  Look for positive feedback.   There should be much more of that than negative feedback.   Keep in mind,  some customers just do not bother to take time to leave feedback, or if they do leave feedback, they leave no comment.   As a seller, I rely on feedback.  I at least want to know that you received your piece of jewelry undamaged, and that you are pleased with your purchase,  or not.  Also consider,  newer sellers may have a lower number of feedback,  don’t let this discourage you buying from that seller, just keep all the other points in mind.   Do they, or have they sold elsewhere?  The seller may just be new that  particular marketplace.

Questions.   As a seller, when I list an item, I try to describe it as thoroughly as possible.   However, sometimes there is something you want to know about the piece that I haven’t addressed.   Always feel free to ask any seller a question about their product.  There is always a  link to contact the seller.   The only dumb question is the one that wasn’t asked.   Consider how quickly the seller responds to your question.  Are they courteous and professional with  their answer?  Did they answer your question to your satisfaction?

Buying from a reputable seller applies to both online and physical venues, such as craft shows.  When I do craft shows, I welcome questions.  The more the better.  I want a happy customer, and my return policy applies to craft shows, also.

So, don’t be shy, ask questions!   What is the return policy, are customers satisfied with the jewelry purchased?   And ask, ask away!  We jewelry artisans love to talk about our jewelry!!!

Thanks for visiting, and I hope your day is absolutely wonderful, peaceful, and safe!

Buying Handcrafted Jewelry: Pricing.

Posted by pixe1 on November 10, 2008

Seems to me,  the first place to start the discussion on buying handcrafted jewelry is pricing.  Let’s face it, it is the first thing I look at,   and I  know price is the first thing you look at.

For the most part,  handcrafted jewelry is  more expensive  than mass produced jewelry.   When purchasing mass produced jewelry,  what do you actually get?   You get a piece of jewelry that thousands,  if not millions,  of other people are wearing.    When purchasing handcrafted jewelry, what do you actually get?   You will get a piece of jewelry that is one of a kind,  or very limited in the number of pieces available.  Only you , or at most, a few other people will be wearing. Even if the seller has more than one piece of an item,  each item is still one of a kind because each piece is handcrafted.   It is very difficult to make two pieces of jewelry exactly the same.   Buying handcrafted jewelry is a really great way to show your individuality,  and show off your personal sense of style!!   So, that said, let us talk about pricing.

There are a few factors to consider when pricing handcrafted jewelry.

  • Cost of supplies.   Beads, precious metal, jumrings, clasps, all cost money.  I try  to find suppliers with the highest quality product  with the best pricing so I can offer fair pricing to you.
  • Time spent designing the jewelry .   Most jewelry artists have visions of what they want to create.   Many of  sketch our ideas and then have to search for the materials needed to create our next masterpiece.
  • Time creating the jewelry.   Once we jewelry artists have our vision,  we need to create.   Some pieces take longer than others.  Simple pieces are less time consuming then others.   It take me much less time to string a necklace than it does to to individually wire wrap each bead and link them together.

Another aspect to consider with pricing is you get what you pay for.   A simple piece of handcrafted jewelry can be inexpensive, however, a more intricate piece that is very inexpensive could raise some warning flags. Is the jewelry made with materials the artist claims?  Is this truly handcrafted, or mass produced and being passed on as handcrafted?

These are the major factors that are considered when pricing handcrafted jewelry.  It really does take time to create handcrafted jewelry .   I strive to present  a high quality piece  of jewelry to you at a fair price.

Next week I will talk about buying from a reputable seller.

Hoping you have an absolutely wonderful, peaceful, and safe day!

This blog is about…..

Posted by pixe1 on November 10, 2008

I have made the decision on how to use this blog….it will be about tips on buying handcrafted jewelry, caring for jewelry,  and will be about the stones (not the rock group, but the stones I use in my jewelry, and some that I don’t).  I plan to write a weekly blog and if there is anything you want discussed, let me know.   I am open to suggestions.   Monthly, I plan to discuss the birthstone of that month.  I also plan to  announce future sales that will take place on my etsy site.   Also, my sale items are also on sale at the craft show I am at that month.

So, to give you a heads up …For the month of December, all turquoise jewelry will be on sale at my etsy shop,   Pixe’s Treasure Chest,  and at the craft show at Wilson Southern Junior High School, December 6, 2008.
